Padres' Dugout Erupts at Cubs Pitcher After HBP Following Game-Changing Homer

Tensions flared in San Diego on Wednesday night as the Padres' dugout reacted strongly to Cubs pitcher Daniel Palencia hitting batter Jake Cronenworth. The incident occurred in the fourth inning of Game 2 of the NL Wild Card series, shortly after the Cubs had taken a 4-1 lead on a two-run home run by Gavin Sheets.

Following the homer, Palencia threw a 100-mph, 3-0 pitch that struck Cronenworth in the back. A voice from the Padres' dugout was audibly heard shouting, "F--k you" toward Palencia. Other members of the Padres' coaching staff and players appeared visibly displeased. A trainer checked on Palencia after the hit-by-pitch, and broadcast commentators noted they did not believe the pitch was intentional.

Palencia, a reliever, had just given up the go-ahead home run to Sheets, which extended the Cubs' deficit from one run to three. After hitting Cronenworth, Palencia remained in the game and recorded the final out of the inning before pitching a scoreless fifth inning. The Cubs ultimately lost the game 4-1, being outscored 12-1 over the two-game series and eliminated from the postseason.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged the disappointment of the season's end. "It didn’t go well here. We just didn’t play well enough," Counsell stated. "You’re going to be disappointed. You’re going to feel unfulfilled, and you can’t — that’s just dominating everything you feel right now."

The loss marks another early exit for the Cubs, who have now been eliminated in the NLDS and Wild Card round in consecutive years, prompting questions about the team's potential ceiling. The series concluded with the Padres advancing, while the Cubs headed home after a brief postseason appearance.
