Packers' Struggles Put Head Coach Matt LaFleur Under Scrutiny

The Green Bay Packers' early-season struggles, culminating in a lopsided 35-14 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons in their home opener, have intensified scrutiny on head coach Matt LaFleur.

The Packers currently hold a 1-2 record, their worst start in LaFleur's eight seasons as coach. This performance follows a pattern of late-season collapses and playoff disappointments that have begun to weigh on the team's reputation.

In Thursday night's game, the Packers' offense struggled to generate momentum against the Falcons. Quarterback Jordan Love completed 28 of 53 passes for one touchdown and threw two interceptions, often pressured by the Falcons' defense. "I think we've got to continue to work with these guys and try to figure out what we do well," LaFleur stated postgame, "because right now I don't know what we're doing well offensively."

A significant factor in the offensive woes has been the offensive line. The team lost standout right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele to an ACL tear, further compromising an already challenged unit. The Packers' line yielded 15 pressures against the Falcons, the second-highest total this season.

Compounding the offensive issues is the team's ineffective rushing game. Green Bay has averaged a league-low 146 rushing yards across three games. Starter Josh Jacobs is currently on the commissioner's list, dealing with legal proceedings.

"I think we can all see the benefit of a strong rushing attack, how you get into normal rhythm on offense and it will open up a lot of things in the passing game," LaFleur said. "Anytime you drop back 50-somewhat times in a game and you have nine rushes, it's usually not going to bode well for you."

The defense also faltered against the Falcons, allowing running back Bijan Robinson to accumulate 213 total yards and two touchdowns, and receiver Drake London to make nine receptions for 194 yards. Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. completed 18 of 25 passes for 256 yards and one touchdown.

LaFleur acknowledged the severity of the team's performance, calling the loss "a butt whooping." The Packers will have 10 days before their Week 4 road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"We've got a couple extra days and everybody's gotta take a long, hard look at themselves and we gotta find solutions and just come back ready for work," LaFleur said. "It certainly was a tough night."

Despite LaFleur's regular-season success, including a 77-42-1 record, recurring postseason failures have drawn criticism. Green Bay has entered the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in three consecutive years, including last season's loss to the Chicago Bears after squandering a significant second-half lead. The team did reward LaFleur with a contract extension earlier this year, but the current season's trajectory is raising concerns.
