Packers' Pursuit of Taylor Signals Potential Exit for Jacobs Amid Abuse Allegations

The Green Bay Packers have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring running back Jonathan Taylor from the Indianapolis Colts, a move that signals a potential desire to move on from their current Pro Bowl running back, Josh Jacobs. Jacobs has been a disappointment for the Packers and is facing mounting legal issues related to domestic abuse allegations.

The Packers are among several teams, including the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Giants, that have shown interest in Taylor, who is nearing the NFL's November 10 trade deadline. However, for Green Bay, this interest is particularly significant given Jacobs' situation.

Jacobs, 28, has played in only two games for the Packers this season after being placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List. This suspension followed his no-contest plea in September to charges of battery and criminal damage to property stemming from a May domestic incident with his former girlfriend. The NFL is currently reviewing previously unreported allegations that Jacobs physically abused three other women. Police records released October 30 revealed that these women had contacted authorities about alleged abuse dating back to 2021.

Attorneys for Jacobs stated that police considered the allegations from the three other women but proceeded with only two misdemeanor charges. Despite this, the NFL's review under its Personal Conduct Policy is ongoing and may now encompass the newly surfaced allegations.

The Packers could potentially save approximately $5 million in salary cap space by releasing Jacobs before the trade deadline. While the team would absorb a dead cap charge for the current and next season, releasing him would yield about $13 million in cap savings in 2027, the final year of his contract.

Acquiring Taylor, who is among the league leaders in rushing yards and tied for the league lead with eight rushing touchdowns, would likely come at a significant cost. The Colts are reportedly seeking a trade package similar to the one the Carolina Panthers received from the San Francisco 49ers for Christian McCaffrey in 2022, which included multiple high-round draft picks. The Packers' interest suggests they may be willing to meet such demands if they decide to move on from Jacobs.
