Packers' Josh Jacobs Denies Mocking Arrest with Handcuff Celebration, Cites Religious Meaning

Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has denied that his touchdown celebration on Thursday Night Football was a mockery of his domestic violence arrest, instead asserting it had religious significance.

Jacobs, in his second game of the season after being placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List amid a league investigation into domestic abuse allegations, scored in the second quarter of the Packers' 27-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers. His celebration involved clasping his hands behind his back, an act that many observers interpreted as a reference to his arrest in May.

However, Jacobs told reporters after the game that the celebration was part of a planned sequence with teammate Savion Williams, inspired by the gospel song 'Break Every Chain.' He expressed frustration that the broadcast did not show the full celebration.

"Me and Savion came up with the celebration, if they would have seen the whole celebration," Jacobs said. "Basically, last week, we said the first celebration, when I score, I was gonna thank God, that's what I did last week. Second was going to be 'Break Every Chain.' It's a gospel song."

Despite Jacobs' explanation, the celebration drew immediate criticism on social media, with many users calling it insensitive and lacking shame or remorse given the nature of his legal troubles.

Jacobs pleaded no contest in August to misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property stemming from a May altercation with his former girlfriend. He was accused of grabbing the woman and throwing her to the floor, causing her to hit her head, with surveillance footage reportedly corroborating the accusations. He was ordered to attend counseling and pay restitution.

The NFL is still investigating the incident, and the six games Jacobs has already missed this season could count toward any potential suspension.

Returning to the field last week against the Detroit Lions, Jacobs also scored a touchdown. Ahead of his return, he expressed regret for bringing distraction to the team, stating, "Sometimes when you go through life, situations occur and a four-second, three-second decision can alter your life, honestly."

Jacobs' attorneys previously stated that he has dedicated months to self-improvement and accepts responsibility for his actions, adding that he is excited to return to work and grateful for the support of his team and the Packers organization.
