Investigative journalist Pablo Torre has raised questions about the conspicuous silence of NBA legend Magic Johnson on social media concerning the sale of EquiTrust Life Insurance Company. This silence is notable, Torre suggests, given the company's prior $350 million loan to a media company owned by Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, who had previously sold EquiTrust to Johnson.
Torre, known for his investigative work, discussed the situation on an episode of "Pablo Torre Finds Out." He pointed out that Johnson, who is known for his extensive social media presence, did not mention the sale of Equitrust when it was acquired by Amistad Financial in November 2025. Amistad Financial was founded and is managed by Eric Holoman, Johnson's longtime business partner and former president of Magic Johnson Enterprises.
"You’d think, given the scale of this transaction… You’d think that Magic Johnson might celebrate this transaction — the transaction that made him a billionaire — but despite the fact that tweets about almost every single thing in his life, the sale of EquiTrust was not mentioned by @magicjohnson once," Torre's guest, Sam Koppelman, stated.
Torre himself described Johnson's lack of commentary as "conspicuous," especially since Johnson had previously frequently tweeted about Equitrust and Holoman. Koppelman echoed this sentiment, calling it "conspicuous, indeed."
Torre stated that he has attempted to reach out to Johnson's representatives for comment but has not yet received a response. The situation involves Equitrust, which Johnson purchased from Walter in 2014, subsequently becoming a billionaire. At the same time, Equitrust was reportedly loaning $350 million to Walter's media company. Holoman, who had served as Equitrust's President and Chief Executive Officer, transitioned to the role of "managing founder" of Amistad Financial following the sale.
The investigative journalist suggested that the absence of any public statement or social media activity from Johnson regarding this significant financial transaction warrants further attention. The story is expected to develop further.
