Two overturned cars caused significant traffic disruptions on the northbound 405 Freeway in West Los Angeles during the Thursday morning commute. The incident, reported shortly before 7:30 a.m. near Santa Monica Boulevard, led the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to close multiple lanes and issue a SigAlert.
The CHP issued a SigAlert around 8 a.m. for the closure of lanes 4, 5, and 6 as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage. SigAlerts are issued for unplanned events that could delay motorists for at least 30 minutes. The alert was extended for another 30 minutes around 8:30 a.m.
At least one person involved in the crash declined medical transport, according to the CHP, and it was not immediately clear if any serious injuries occurred. Images from the scene showed traffic backing up considerably as drivers navigated around the obstruction.
Caltrans advised motorists seeking an alternate northbound route from Santa Monica Boulevard to travel east to Sepulveda Boulevard before heading north to an I-405 entrance at Moraga Drive.
The lanes were eventually cleared and reopened. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet announced any citations or arrests related to the incident.
