Newport Beach, California, experienced significant unrest during its July 4th celebrations, resulting in over 400 arrests as thousands of people converged on the Balboa Peninsula. The situation escalated into riots, with instances of thrown fireworks, looted storefronts, and clashes with law enforcement.

From midnight on July 3 to 6 a.m. on July 5, a total of 402 individuals were taken into custody. The City of Newport Beach stated that the sudden influx of thousands into a confined area created an immediate public safety threat, necessitating a coordinated regional law enforcement response. Approximately 350 Newport Beach police officers were augmented by personnel from 17 other law enforcement agencies.

Viral footage showed officers on horseback attempting to disperse large crowds. The city reported that one officer was struck by a mortar and received on-scene treatment. A nearby supermarket was also looted amidst the disturbances. Officials declared an unlawful assembly by 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, urging residents to shelter in place.

Mayor Lauren Kleiman condemned the actions of the rioters, stating that "anarchistic youth" occupied the beaches and disrespected the city and country. She praised the law enforcement efforts and vowed that such destructive behavior would not be tolerated. "To anyone who threw mortars at our officers and into crowds, started fights, destroyed property, or ignored police commands, enjoy your view from your jail cell," Kleiman said.

Social media posts, reportedly inciting what are known as 'Takeovers,' are believed to have fueled the unrest, drawing a large number of partygoers to the area rapidly. The Newport Beach Police Association noted on Facebook that individuals "came to our city with the intent on causing harm, injury and destruction." One Facebook post described being "trapped" by the chaos, witnessing illegal fireworks, and encountering police in riot gear.

This incident follows similar issues in Newport Beach, which saw around 500 arrests during spring break in 2025 and 76 arrests during the previous year's Fourth of July celebration. In response to anticipated crowds, the city had implemented stricter enforcement and increased fines in problematic areas. They also expanded Safety Enhancement Zones, partnered with regional agencies, and established a mobile booking station.

The Newport Beach Fire Department responded to 102 emergencies on July 4th alone, including ten fires and transporting 44 individuals to hospitals, six of whom were trauma patients. City officials indicated they would continue to evaluate the response and seek further measures to deter unlawful behavior while maintaining a welcoming environment for future celebrations. Cleanup efforts began Sunday morning after order was restored to the Balboa Peninsula.
