Over 2,300 Pounds of Pork Sausages Recalled Due to Plastic Contamination

Fontanini Foods LLC has initiated an urgent recall for 2,320 pounds of its frozen pork breakfast sausages due to potential contamination with clear, hard plastic. The recall was issued after two customers reported finding plastic in the product.

Product Details and Distribution

The affected products are "Fontanini PORK SAUSAGE LINKS," packaged in 10lb cardboard cases bearing the item number '393' and a 'PACKED ON 06/23/2026' date on the shipping label. These sausages were produced on June 23, 2026, and subsequently shipped to distributors in California, Florida, Michigan, and Nevada. From these distribution points, the sausages were sent to various food establishments, including restaurants.

Health Risks and Official Guidance

While no illnesses or injuries have been reported to date in connection with this recall, health officials are advising consumers and food establishments to exercise caution. Hard plastic fragments in food can pose a significant risk, potentially causing cuts to the mouth and teeth, or becoming lodged in the throat as a choking hazard. In severe cases, medical professionals warn that such fragments could lead to serious internal complications, including bowel perforation and sepsis.

The recall was announced by the Food Safety and Inspection Service, which posted the alert originating from the sausage supplier. Health authorities have urged restaurants not to serve the recalled sausages. Instead, they should be disposed of immediately, or returned to the seller for a full refund.

Context of Food Recalls

Contamination with foreign materials, such as plastic, can occur during the manufacturing process, often due to equipment malfunction. This incident is reminiscent of other recalls involving plastic contamination. In March, the FDA issued a recall for several Wawa-branded milk products after plastic shards were found on their production line, affecting nearly 22,000 units sold in multiple states. That recall was classified as Class II, indicating a situation that could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or a remote probability of serious adverse health outcomes.
