Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 Episode 7 Recap

Season 2, Episode 7 of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, titled “Heart of the Highlands,” saw significant developments for both Jamie and Claire’s families. While Jamie’s parents, Brian and Ellen, worked towards building a future together, Claire’s parents, Henry and Julia, grappled with the complex realities of their time-traveling situation.

Following the Battle of Sheriffmuir, Dougal returned to Leoch with his saviors, Brian and Murtagh. Colum, concerned about potential repercussions from the Redcoats, exiled Dougal to a crofter’s cottage. Meanwhile, Brian was welcomed at Leoch, where he reunited with Ellen. Ellen revealed she had lost their child, but Brian offered comfort and expressed hope for future children. Despite Ellen’s fears of being cursed or abandoned, Brian remained devoted, even as he confronted his father, Simon, who had previously poisoned Ellen’s mother.

New Characters and Unraveling Plots

The episode introduced Margaret Grant, sister of Uncle Mac, who was stopped by Redcoats searching for Jacobites. She received an invitation from the king for an investiture hosted by the Duke of Sandringham. Lord Lovat also received an invitation, prompting Julia to seek entry, though Lovat initially refused due to her outspoken nature. Margaret, concerned about her attire for the investiture, enlisted Henry and Mr. Bug to search for her supposedly missing pearl necklace. Henry, however, saw this as an opportunity to hunt for gemstones for time-traveling purposes.

Gemstones and Family Bonds

Mrs. Bug, seeking to have another child, pointed Henry towards a location known for amethysts, based on an old legend. Mr. Bug joined Henry on this quest, which led them to a gorge where Henry successfully mined amethysts. Back at Leoch, Murtagh, emboldened by surviving the battle, pursued Grace, and they arranged a secret meeting. Dougal also experienced a tender moment with Maura before going into hiding.

Confrontations and Revelations

Brian confronted Simon, demanding the house at Broch Morda and forbidding him from approaching Ellen. Lord Lovat, in gratitude, invited Julia to accompany him to the investiture. Meanwhile, Henry and Julia planned to use the amethysts to return to the 20th century. However, upon returning to Leathers, Julia encountered Maisri, who revealed that Julia herself is not a time traveler. Maisri explained that Julia’s ability to travel was due to carrying William, who possesses time-traveling capabilities, not due to any inherent power of her own.

Uncertain Futures

As Brian and Ellen prepared to build a home, the origins of the Fraser family home, Lallybroch, were established. The episode concluded with the stark contrast between the potential for a new beginning for Jamie’s parents and the insurmountable obstacles facing Claire’s parents, whose ability to return to their own time remained uncertain. The fate of Colum’s harsh judgment on Ellen, deeming a woman unable to have children worthless, also remained a point of contention.
