Otter Confronts Surfers in Tense Standoff Off California Coast
A sea otter climbed onto a young surfer's board in Santa Cruz, highlighting a recent increase in marine mammal encounters.
A group of young surfers experienced a tense encounter with a sea otter off the coast of Santa Cruz, California. The marine mammal approached the surfers and, at one point, climbed onto the board of one individual.
A witness captured the interaction on video and reported to ABC 7 that the otter appeared aggressive. While the exact intentions of the animal remain unknown, the incident occurred at Steamer Lane.
One of the surfers reportedly moved towards the otter to create distance, successfully deterring it from the group. No injuries were reported as a result of the encounter.
This incident is part of a recent trend of increased interactions between marine wildlife and humans along the California coast. In September, a paddleboarder in Santa Cruz was knocked into the water and bitten by a sea lion. The paddleboarder, Heather Gray, described the encounter as terrifying, recalling that the sea lion grabbed her hair before she managed to fight it off and return to shore. The sea lion reportedly followed her until she reached land.
Gray received tetanus and rabies shots for her bites and speculated that the sea lion might have been one of the many affected by domoic acid poisoning, a condition that can cause unpredictable behavior in marine mammals. The Marine Mammal Center has reported an increase in sea lions and fur seals suffering from this poisoning around Monterey Bay, linked to harmful algal blooms that contaminate their food sources.
