Orlando Ranks as Top US Destination in Global Happiness Index

Orlando, Florida, has been recognized as the world's third-happiest holiday destination in a recent study, making it the highest-ranking U.S. city on the list. The study, conducted by BookRetreats and referred to as the Holiday Happiness Index, evaluated various factors contributing to traveler contentment.

Orlando stands out for its significant green spaces, boasting 258 square meters per person, the highest figure in the index. The city also benefits from approximately 2,930 hours of sunshine annually, complemented by attractions such as Universal Studios Florida, Universal Volcano Bay, and Lake Eola Park. These elements contribute to its appeal as a destination that combines leisure with outdoor enjoyment.

Globally, Lisbon, Portugal, secured the top spot, praised for its healthy food options, walkable streets, and over 2,800 hours of sunshine annually. Helsinki, Finland, ranked second, noted for its extensive parks and green spaces, high sleep quality, walkability, and calm atmosphere.

The Holiday Happiness Index suggests that factors like sunlight, physical activity, quality food, and rest, often found during holidays, can trigger the release of happiness-inducing hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin. Dr. Natalie Dattilo-Ryan, a clinical psychologist, notes that these hormones influence mood, sleep, and energy levels.

Other notable destinations in the top 10 include Athens, Greece, which ranked fourth for its sunshine, history, walkability, and healthy food options. Edinburgh, Scotland, placed fifth, being the only UK city in the top 10, recognized for its food and greenery. Madrid, Spain, followed at sixth, and Vienna, Austria, secured seventh place. Budapest, Hungary, and Oslo, Norway, ranked eighth and ninth, respectively. Vilnius, Lithuania, rounded out the top 10, also being cited as one of Europe's most affordable city breaks.
