Oregon Teacher and Volleyball Coach Megan Lambert Killed in School Shooting
A 25-year-old educator was among four victims fatally shot by a teenage gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School.
Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old teacher and volleyball coach, was identified as one of four people killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. The Central Oregon native was fatally shot by 16-year-old Griffin John on Thursday.
Lambert's family described her as having a "huge heart" and a passion for sports. In a statement released by the Bend Police Department, they shared that Lambert "turned down extra pay as a coach so that families who couldn’t afford to participate could play the sport." They added that she "always fought for the underdog, especially those with special needs."
The three students killed in the attack were aged 5, 8, and 11. The shooter, John, was killed by a bystander, identified as Kaylub Giamanco, who intervened inside a special education classroom. Lambert's family expressed gratitude to Giamanco, calling him a hero.
Authorities are investigating the extreme measures the shooter took to enter the school and the specific reasons for targeting the special education room.
