Oregon Serial Killer Suspect Indicted in Sixth Death
Jesse Calhoun, already facing murder charges for five women, is now accused in the death of Elizabeth Gibson, a homeless woman who disappeared nearly four years ago.
A suspect accused of being a serial killer in Oregon has been indicted in the death of a sixth victim, prosecutors announced this week. Jesse Calhoun, 41, faces a new charge of first-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of Elizabeth “Libby” Gibson, 32, who vanished in late November 2022.
Calhoun is already charged with the second-degree murders of five other women: Ashley Real, 22; Kristin Smith, 22; Charity Perry, 24; Bridget Webster, 31; and Joanna Speaks, 32. He also faces two counts of second-degree abuse of a corpse related to those cases.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s office stated that Calhoun was indicted for Gibson's death based on unlawfully and recklessly causing her death under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life. Gibson, who was homeless, is considered Calhoun's first alleged victim, according to authorities. The exact cause of Gibson's death has not been released.
Gibson’s family released a statement expressing gratitude for the step toward justice. "Libby was kind, creative and silly. She welcomed everyone with love and acceptance. Her future was tragically taken from her way [too] soon," the statement read.
Calhoun is scheduled for arraignment on Monday. District Attorney Nathan Vasquez vowed to pursue justice for all the victims' families. "We will not stop," Vasquez said. "We will do everything in our power to hold him accountable and see that justice is done for each and every one of these victims. We remain committed to these families for as long as it takes."
Investigators identified Calhoun as a person of interest in July 2023 after finding links between the deaths of Real, Smith, Perry, and Webster. Smith was discovered deceased in southeast Portland woodland on Feb. 19, 2023, two months after she was reported missing.
Calhoun is accused of killing Perry on March 8, Speaks 10 days later, and Webster on April 26. Real’s body was found on May 7, but the date of her alleged murder by Calhoun is unclear.
He was charged with the murders of Perry, Webster, and Speaks in 2024. The following year, he was charged in Smith’s death, and in May of this year, he was charged with Real’s murder. Calhoun has pleaded not guilty to the previous murder charges. His criminal history dates back to 2003.
