Oregon School Shooter Was Allegedly Assaulted Twice Before Deadly Attack

The 16-year-old suspect in a deadly shooting at an Oregon elementary school had been assaulted twice in recent years, including an incident where he was allegedly beaten by his mother's boyfriend, according to police reports. Authorities are still working to determine the motive for Griffin John II's attack on October 15 at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, which resulted in the deaths of five-year-old Rhoam Summer, teacher Megan Lambert, and two other special needs students.

Court records indicate John, who had a cognitive disability, faced bullying from peers and experienced a tumultuous home life. In one incident when he was 11, a friend of his sister allegedly assaulted him at home. According to a police report, the friend slapped John, causing him to chip a tooth, and then punched him in the back of the head multiple times. John's sister told police at the time that her brother was upset about being bullied at school and was hesitant to report it for fear of his mother's reaction.

Another police report from 2025 details an incident where John was allegedly punched repeatedly by his mother's boyfriend during an argument. John reported intervening to protect his mother as the man became violent. He stated the man shoved him and then body-slammed him to the ground before punching him multiple times. The assailant fled the scene after police were called, and neither John nor his mother chose to cooperate with the investigation or pursue charges, stating the matter had been resolved.

Further court documents reveal that John's mother, Shauntai Nickerson, was accused of assault twice in Deschutes County. In one 2023 incident, she and her elder daughter were accused of assaulting a woman outside a Taco Bell. Bystanders reported Nickerson attempted to run the woman over with an SUV before she and her daughter attacked the alleged victim. Nickerson's daughter was charged with harassment and attempted assault, while Nickerson faced charges for assault and harassment in a separate incident later that year, though the assault charge was later dismissed due to insufficient evidence. Despite these allegations, Nickerson was able to purchase the Mossberg Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun, registered in her name, which John used in the school shooting.

John used the shotgun to force his way into Silver Rail Elementary on October 15, firing 15 rounds before he was fatally shot by 36-year-old father Kaylub Giamanco. Giamanco, whose daughter attends the school, recounted hearing gunfire and children pleading for their lives. He entered the school, confronted John, and fired at the suspect to prevent further harm. Giamanco has spoken about the emotional toll of taking a life, emphasizing his actions were to protect the children inside.

One of Giamanco's daughters attended Silver Rail Elementary. He said he went into a panic and quickly grabbed his gun from his center console when he saw John throw his rifle over the fence and follow after it
