Oregon Elementary School Shooting Leaves Three Children Dead
Authorities respond to a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, where officials described the event as a 'senseless tragedy.'
A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday resulted in the deaths of at least three children. Local officials described the incident as a "senseless tragedy." The shooting began with reports of shots fired into a vehicle near the school around 12:59 p.m. Police arrived on the scene within minutes, and the lone shooter, believed to be a 16-year-old boy, was killed shortly thereafter.
Bend–La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook expressed the district's grief, stating, "We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy." He added, "We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing."
Law enforcement evacuated classrooms and established a reunification center for families at Journey Church. Buses carrying students arrived at the church to reunite with their parents. The school, which has approximately 450 students, canceled all activities for Friday.
Oregon Rep. Janelle Bynum reacted with deep sorrow, saying, "Our babies are supposed to do arts and crafts at school, not use their desks as cover from gunfire." She called the event "every parent's worst fear" and questioned, "When will it end?"
Sen. Ron Wyden echoed calls for action, urging the passage of gun control legislation. "The best way to honor these victims is to at long last pass common-sense gun laws that reduce the risks of more children, parents, teachers and staff forced to live in fear of similar nightmares for their schools," Wyden said.
Rep. Maxine Dexter stated that "schools should be places of learning, friendship and joy" and that "It is incumbent on me, and every lawmaker, to do everything we can to ensure our kids are safe."
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek urged the community to support each other, writing on X, "No community should have to live through this day."
At least two individuals were transported to a local hospital following the incident, though their conditions remain unclear. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with the FBI's Portland bureau assisting local authorities.
