A tight-knit Oregon community is mourning the loss of Connor Navarro, 19, a promising athlete and engineering student who was killed on June 23 while cycling. Navarro was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Guillen Salvador-Jaime at the intersection of East Main Street and Northeast Century Boulevard in Hillsboro.
Hillsboro police confirmed that the driver's failure to obey a traffic control device was a contributing factor in the crash. Investigators also noted that speed may have played a role, though the investigation is ongoing. Salvador-Jaime was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter and reckless driving.
Navarro, who was training for an upcoming triathlon, was described by his mother, Charli Navarro, as "a pillar of the family" with a zest for life. He was also the class valedictorian and was beginning a new externship the day before his death. His mother recounted the tragic moment she discovered her son after sensing something was wrong.
This incident represents a profound double loss for the Navarro family. Connor's father, Phillip, died of brain cancer approximately 18 months prior to his son's death. His mother described the immeasurable heartbreak of planning a second funeral.
Community Response and Safety Concerns
Navarro is being remembered by friends, classmates, and neighbors as a brilliant, hardworking, and kind individual. Tributes have been placed at the intersection where the fatal accident occurred. A GoFundMe has been established by friends to assist the family with funeral expenses.
Neighbors have expressed concerns about dangerous driving behaviors in the area. Matt Ellenger, a neighbor who was among the first on the scene, called for a fundamental redesign of the road to improve safety. Navarro's mother is also advocating for greater awareness and improvements to make the intersection safer.
The community held a vigil on Sunday. The family hopes to eventually install a memorial bench in Connor's honor at Orenco Woods Nature Park. The tragedy has renewed discussions about cyclist safety on Oregon roads.
