The Orange Order has put forward a revised proposal for a parade at Drumcree, a location in Northern Ireland known for contentious parading disputes. The organization stated that the updated plans are scaled back, with an intention to march along the Garvaghy Road in Portadown. The proposed march would involve 60 members walking silently on Sunday, September 27.
This submission follows a court case where a ruling by the Parades Commission concerning Drumcree was overturned. The commission had previously prohibited the parade from proceeding down the Garvaghy Road, a decision that had been consistently upheld since 1998. The ruling in 1998 marked the beginning of a prolonged parading dispute that led to some of Northern Ireland's most severe public disorder.
In the years following the 1998 decision, standoffs frequently occurred as Order members protested restrictions by walking to police barricades. Residents along the Garvaghy Road also organized protests.
The new application will be reviewed by the Parades Commission, with an immediate decision not anticipated.
