Oprah Winfrey Sparks Reactions for Slim Figure During Ireland Trip
The media mogul's appearance drew comments from followers, some noting a significant change and questioning its cause.
Oprah Winfrey drew significant attention for her slim physique while on a trip to Ireland with longtime friend Gayle King, prompting a range of reactions from observers online.
King shared photos and videos from their excursion on Instagram, including images of the two women by the Poolbeg Lighthouse in Dublin. Both were dressed in athletic wear, with King sporting orange biker shorts and a tank top, while Winfrey wore brown leggings and a white long-sleeve top.
Some social media users expressed surprise at Winfrey's appearance, with comments ranging from "unrecognizable" to speculation about AI-generated images. "I didn’t recognize Oprah until the third look. Ladies, y’all have turned your lives around. Kudos," one user wrote, while another commented, "This looks like AI."
King’s post detailed their visit, noting that they engaged in typical tourist activities, including a stop at Doheny & Nesbitt for Guinness, which King specified was non-alcoholic. She also mentioned their attendance at an "In Conversation with Oprah Winfrey" event.
Winfrey, 72, has been open about her decades-long journey with weight management. Her struggles began in her early career in 1976, when she reported feeling immense pressure and turned to comfort eating, leading to a significant weight gain. She has publicly documented various attempts at weight loss, including a highly publicized liquid diet in 1988 that resulted in a 67-pound loss but was later described as self-starvation that disrupted her metabolism.
By the early 1990s, Winfrey weighed 237 pounds and described feeling ashamed. A turning point came after connecting with a personal trainer, though her weight continued to fluctuate over the years. She joined Weight Watchers in 2015, reporting a 40-pound loss within a year.
In December 2023, Winfrey confirmed she had begun using a weight loss medication, referred to as a "weight loss jabs," to manage her weight and reduce "food noise." She stated that the availability of such medically approved prescriptions for weight management felt like a "relief" and "redemption," and that she was done with the public shaming surrounding weight. She also noted incorporating regular exercise into her routine. Winfrey revealed in January that she had reached 155 pounds.
Gayle King, 71, has also appeared slimmer in recent months, though she has not confirmed or denied using weight loss medication.
