OpenAI is structured into three core divisions: Research, responsible for training frontier models; Scaling and Infrastructure, which manages the computational resources; and Applications, focused on bringing the products of the other two divisions to users. Vijaye Raji, chief technology officer of the Applications division, leads key technical teams that contribute to the functionality of tools like ChatGPT and Codex.
Raji stated that his teams' work helps power ChatGPT and Codex, OpenAI's coding tool, which he noted has made the company's engineers ten times more productive. He also oversees the technology behind ChatGPT's new advertising program, launched in February. This program reached an annualized revenue of $1 billion by late August.
According to Raji, the advertising system was designed so that one model generates responses, while a separate model provides distinct advertisements. He emphasized OpenAI's commitment to user trust, stating, "We make sure that users never mistake what the model says [for] an ad. We will always optimize for and prioritize user trust over anything else."
A correction issued on September 22 clarified Raji's responsibilities, specifying that he leads key technical teams powering ChatGPT and Codex, rather than directly engineering those tools himself.
