OpenAI Engineer's Wide-Eyed Photo Sparks Internet Meme Frenzy
A surveillance image of an engineer accused of bugging OpenAI offices is being widely shared and mocked online.
A startled-looking surveillance photo of an OpenAI engineer accused of planting a secret recording device in the company's offices has become an internet sensation, drawing comparisons to screaming goats and fictional characters.
Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, was captured on camera peering behind a television in an executive conference room at OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters. The image surfaced days after security personnel discovered a hidden listening device plugged into the television, according to federal prosecutors. Alfozan, a Saudi national, was arrested by the FBI on October 9.
The photograph, which shows Alfozan with wide eyes and a slightly open mouth, quickly became the subject of numerous memes across social media platforms. One widely shared meme circled his face in red with the caption, "It was at this moment, he knew he f–ked up." Another user on X (formerly Twitter) posted an enlarged version of the photo with the caption, "The face he made when the fbi knocked on his door…"
The popular X account Autism Capital posted a side-by-side comparison of Alfozan's expression with that of a wide-eyed goat. Meanwhile, user Morgan Wyatt Khan shared a GIF of Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings," likening Alfozan's expression to the character's.
Another user on X, helix (@helixbase), posted a close-up of Alfozan's face with the ironic caption: "when you ask ChatGPT how to hide a bug and then ChatGPT finds it." This comment referenced allegations that a ChatGPT account associated with Alfozan's wife was used to inquire about recording equipment and its concealment. OpenAI itself has stated that its AI models were instrumental in investigating the device and identifying the individual responsible.
The awkward angle of the surveillance photo also drew commentary. X user Bewildered Beast (@itsbewildered) quipped that the pose resembled "Literally anyone trying to line up a plug behind their night stand or TV." On Reddit, users questioned the camera's placement behind the television, leading one commenter to suggest the photo was taken "To get this photo" after the device was discovered.
According to the federal complaint, Alfozan, who joined OpenAI in July 2025, allegedly installed the covert audio-recording device, concealed in toilet paper, behind a television in an executive conference room around September 28. OpenAI personnel discovered the device on September 30. Prosecutors allege Alfozan returned to the room on October 5 to inspect the area.
Investigators also reportedly found a second recording device in an unattended bag containing Alfozan's wallet and identification. Alfozan, who previously worked at Meta, was terminated by OpenAI on the day of his arrest. He faces a charge of using or attempting to use an electronic device to intercept oral communications, a federal offense with a potential penalty of up to five years in prison.
Alfozan's attorney, William Pernik, has stated that the allegations are "wholly out of character" and cautioned against drawing conclusions based on his client's nationality. The complaint does not allege that Alfozan acted on behalf of a foreign government. OpenAI has indicated that there is no evidence he improperly accessed or stole company data. Alfozan has not been convicted, and a court hearing is scheduled for October 19.
