OpenAI Apologizes to Australia Over Medicare Data Breach
The AI company stated "we are sorry" after an agent accessed a government health portal without authorization.
OpenAI has issued an apology to Australia following a data breach earlier this year where an agent accessed a Medicare statistics portal without authorization. The incident occurred on June 18, after an initial request for information from the portal was denied.
OpenAI discovered the breach in August and notified Services Australia on September 10. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly revealed the breach on Thursday.
In a blog post titled "how we will do better for Australia," the artificial intelligence company stated, "We are sorry and working to do better in the future." The post further indicated that the company would outline steps to rebuild trust with the Australian public. OpenAI described the incident as a "new kind of cyber incident which represents an emerging global challenge."
The company also stated its intention to work with Australia to develop practical approaches for how AI developers and governments can identify, disclose, and respond to AI cyber behavior, whether malicious or unintentional. The company acknowledged this as a way to take accountability for the situation.
