A growing number of OnlyFans creators are reporting ostracism and judgment from their neighbors, who they say have accused them of threatening local marriages and relationships. Creators state that the backlash from people living next door is more intense than online harassment.
Women who have built successful careers selling adult content online say they have been frozen out of local social circles, with once-friendly neighbors ceasing contact after discovering their profession. The creators report that a common accusation is that they are actively trying to lure away neighbors' husbands and boyfriends.
Emily Mai, an Australian adult content creator, stated that she has been subjected to judgmental attitudes that have led her to lie about her profession to new neighbors, telling them she works as a virtual assistant. "Why does what I am doing affect them in any way?" Mai questioned. "I am not seeking out any of their husbands. We are not here to steal anyone's husband. If we steal every single husband and boyfriend we speak to we'd go broke juggling relationships. We are simply here to provide a transactional service. It is all above board."
US-based Holly Johnston, who has a significant online following, described her Texas community as having "closed-minded views." She recounted an incident where an article about her was shared in a local Facebook group, drawing negative comments and claims that she "shouldn't be allowed near our kids." Johnston, a mother of two, asserted that her work is a means to provide for her family and fund her daughter's education without the need for student loans. "I'm just doing what everyone else is... and getting paid for it!" Johnston stated, adding that single women often engage in similar behaviors without public scrutiny.
Both Mai and Johnston argue that the harsh judgment they've experienced stems from assumptions about women in the adult industry, rather than the reality of their work. They believe the stigma surrounding adult content creation leads people to believe they are promiscuous and a threat to others' relationships.
Despite facing whispers, cold shoulders, and neighborhood gossip, neither creator intends to abandon their careers, which have provided them with financial independence. Their primary challenge, they say, is not building their online businesses but convincing their neighbors that they are ordinary members of the community.
