Young people frequently experience significant emotional and psychological distress due to persistent and hostile online criticism, according to safeguarding lead Jess John of Young Gloucestershire.

"Young people report that it is not necessarily one abusive comment that causes emotional and psychological impact but rather frequent and sustained hostile criticism," John stated. The charity's youth workers address online safety as a key theme, teaching methods for blocking and reporting individuals.

Paul Noblet, head of external affairs and research at mental health charity YoungMinds, echoed these concerns, noting the organization's consistent calls for action against online harms. "We're increasingly hearing about the impact these can have on young people's mental health," he said, referring to issues like exposure to harmful content, online abuse, and addictive platform designs.

Experts suggest that the digital world creates a 'perfect storm' for online abuse. The motivations behind such behavior are often attributed to boredom and jealousy from those leaving the comments.
