A poll commissioned by CNN has revealed that 34% of Democrats and like-minded adults now identify as "democratic socialists." This finding comes amid growing concern over the increasing influence of groups such as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) within the national political landscape.
The poll, conducted by SSRS, found that 15% of all respondents identify as democratic socialists. Among Democratic-aligned respondents who identify as democratic socialists, the majority are younger than 45 and are White. According to the poll data, these individuals are also less likely to hold a college degree and tend to earn less than $100,000 annually.
Democratic socialists who participated in the poll indicated a higher motivation to vote this year, with 66% stating they are "extremely motivated" compared to 57% of other Democrats.
DSA Candidates Achieve Electoral Success
DSA-backed candidates have recently secured victories in various elections. In New York City, Zohran Mamdani, who has been endorsed by the DSA, was elected mayor. Similarly, Seattle voters elected a self-identified socialist Democrat, Katie Wilson, as mayor. On the federal level, several DSA-endorsed candidates have won Democratic primaries for U.S. House seats in New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Abdul El-Sayed, another DSA-favored candidate, was considered a strong contender for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan. Mentioned in news reports regarding electoral victories, socialist Zohran Mamdani announced that five city-owned grocery stores in New York City would offer a 30 percent discount on essential items, potentially saving shoppers an estimated $90 per month.
DSA Policy Platform
The DSA's updated policy platform advocates for significant structural changes. Proposals include eliminating the U.S. Senate, replacing the President and Supreme Court with branches subordinate to Congress, and granting mass amnesty to all immigrants. The platform also calls for the end of all deportations and free migration. Additionally, it supports extending full voting rights to noncitizens and individuals with criminal convictions.
Other policy recommendations from the DSA include establishing a 32-hour work week without a reduction in pay or benefits, implementing Medicare for All, canceling all student loan debt, abolishing cash bail, and enacting universal rent control.
Republican reactions to the poll and the DSA's growing influence have been critical. Mike Marinella, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, stated that Americans have reasons to be concerned about a force within the Democratic Party pushing for policies such as abolishing ICE, defunding the police, and eliminating the Senate. Natalie Baldassarre, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, expressed that the Democratic Party's embrace of these policies and candidates could negatively impact them in upcoming elections, asserting that a majority of Americans reject this ideology.
