One person was killed and another seriously injured Sunday in a shooting at San Pedro Square in San Jose, California, a popular entertainment spot that has been screening World Cup matches.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide, according to a statement from the San Jose Police Department posted on X. Several surrounding streets were closed in the area as police responded.

While the venue has been hosting World Cup viewing parties, no games were being screened at the time of the shooting. The only match of the day in the tournament had concluded around 2 p.m. local time.

Police confirmed that one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

San Pedro Square is one of several locations in the San Francisco Bay Area where large crowds have gathered for watch parties during the World Cup. The Bay Area has hosted five World Cup matches, with the most recent being a knockout match on Wednesday between Bosnia and co-hosts the United States.

A Reuters journalist at the scene observed a significant police presence, multiple police vehicles, and emergency personnel attending to a victim. The area was cordoned off, and most nearby bars were closed following the incident.

A security guard, who spoke anonymously, stated that she witnessed the injured person in distress, noting visible blood. Police were reportedly interviewing security personnel and witnesses.

Numerous fan zones have been established across the Bay Area for the tournament.
