One Dead, 10 Hurt in Bronx Apartment Fire
A blaze tore through a six-story building, forcing one man to jump from a fourth-floor window.
One person died and 10 others were injured when a fire erupted in a Bronx apartment building on Wednesday morning. The blaze began around 7:45 a.m. on the fourth floor of the six-story building located on Montgomery Avenue near West 175th Street in Morris Heights, according to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).
Ring camera footage captured the fire shooting from an apartment door and filling the hallway with smoke. FDNY firefighters arrived and began to combat the flames. Deputy Chief Andrew Holzmaier reported that the fire spread to an adjoining apartment, two apartments above, and into the cockloft space.
An unidentified adult victim was pronounced dead at the scene. A 31-year-old man suffered burns and other injuries after jumping from a fourth-floor window to escape the fire. He was transported to Jacobi Medical Center and is in critical but stable condition. Five other civilians sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
Two firefighters sustained moderate injuries, and two others had minor injuries, none of which were life-threatening. A total of 140 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the incident, with 46 units on the scene. The fire was declared under control shortly before 10 a.m. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
