Omar Not Under Gag Order Like Trump, Attorney General Says

Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is not facing a gag order in the federal immigration fraud investigation against her, a right he noted was not afforded to former President Donald Trump during his criminal indictments. Blanche made these remarks on the podcast "Pod Force One," hosted by Miranda Devine.

Blanche, who previously served as Trump's personal attorney, drew a distinction between Omar's public comments on her ongoing investigation and the gag orders imposed on Trump. "To the extent that [Omar’s] commented on it, one of the things that she said is that we’re not going to keep her quiet, right? We’re not trying to keep her quiet," Blanche told Devine. He added that the current Department of Justice is not attempting to silence Omar, contrasting this with the actions taken during the Trump administration.

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith had sought gag orders against Trump in the election interference and classified documents cases. While one effort was successful in the election interference case, a judge denied the request related to the classified documents case. Trump also faced gag orders during his civil fraud and "hush money" trials in Manhattan.

Blanche accused Democrats of "gaslighting the American people" by suggesting Trump is "weaponizing" the Department of Justice against Omar and other members of "The Squad." He argued that the focus on the DOJ's actions regarding Trump ignores the broader context of legal actions taken against him and his family.

"If you compare – and we’ve spent a lot of time at the Department of Justice working on our anti-weaponization task force, just talking about what happened over the past several years beyond President Trump and his family – but if you want to talk about President Trump and his family, aside from the multiple indictments against the President in multiple jurisdictions, there’s an attorney general in your state in New York that tried to destroy not only him, his family, his children, his business, okay, but yet we’re weaponizing,” Blanche stated.

When asked about Trump's demeanor during his legal challenges, Blanche described the former president as "frustrated and mad and angry" but "never down." He recalled Trump's reaction to his mugshot being taken in Atlanta, noting that it became a "rallying cry" for him rather than a discouraging event. Blanche pointed out that mugshots were not taken in three of the four criminal cases against Trump.

Blanche suggested that the American public sees through what he described as the "gaslighting" regarding the alleged weaponization of the justice system.
