Omar Cooper Jr. Becomes Latest Jets Rookie With Breakout Performance
Rookie wide receiver returns from injury to lead the team in receiving yards and score the Jets' only touchdown in a loss to the Patriots.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Omar Cooper Jr. delivered a standout performance in his return from a high-ankle sprain, becoming the latest New York Jets rookie to make a significant impact. The wide receiver recorded six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-19 loss to the Patriots, marking his first game action since Week 1.
Cooper's promising start to his rookie campaign was cut short in the season opener against the Titans when he suffered an ankle injury on a 30-yard reception on the game's first drive. After missing four weeks, he was back on the field and led the Jets in both catches and receiving yards against New England.
"It was a great feeling," Cooper said of his return. "It felt good to finally be back out there."
His lone touchdown came in the third quarter on a 48-yard pass from quarterback Geno Smith. Smith praised Cooper's resilience and playmaking ability.
"I think Omar did a tremendous job of coming back from injury, fought just to get back out there," Smith said. "What he did is showcase who he is. He’s a playmaker. He’s a guy who finds ways to make catches, and the tough catches, he makes them look easy. Really impressed with the way that he performed and looking forward to building on that."
Cooper's performance continues a trend of impactful games from the Jets' 2026 first-round draft picks. Edge rusher David Bailey, the No. 2 overall selection, recorded three sacks in the previous week's win over the Browns. Tight end Kenyon Sadiq, taken 16th overall, had 105 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Lions.
Cooper, the 30th overall pick, noted that his brief appearance in Week 1 provided a confidence boost. "I would definitely say that Titans game, coming up you have to get that confidence," Cooper said. "I feel like that catch allowed me to get that confidence. You’re supposed to be here and just trusting in my abilities."
Cooper and Sadiq are the third rookie receiving tandem in Jets history to each achieve a 100-yard receiving game in the same season. They join the ranks of Rich Caster and Eddie Bell from 1970, and Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall from 2022.
