Olympic rowing silver medallist Jack Beaumont intervened Sunday morning on the River Thames after a speedboat allegedly rammed a rower from Maidenhead Rowing Club and then threatened Beaumont himself.
The incident occurred when Beaumont, 32, asked the skipper of the speedboat, identified as the "Mayfair Lady," about his actions after the vessel allegedly struck a scull. According to reports, the speedboat owner then accelerated towards Beaumont and unleashed verbal abuse, calling him a derogatory term and telling him to "shut your f***ing mouth."
Footage captured the speedboat appearing to reverse towards Beaumont, who skillfully maneuvered his scull to avoid a collision. Beaumont then reportedly lured the speedboat away from other rowers further down the river to de-escalate the situation. Witnesses described the speedboat driver's actions as "highly dangerous" and potentially "life-threatening."
Thames Valley Police arrested a 67-year-old man from Windsor on suspicion of criminal damage, threats to kill, a public order offense, common assault, and endangering an individual with a watercraft. He remained in police custody as of Sunday.
Maidenhead Rowing Club confirmed an incident involving a collision with another river user and subsequent damage to club equipment. The club stated, "We regard this as a serious and dangerous incident. The safety of everyone on the water is our absolute priority, and behaviour of this kind, endangering other river users in this way, is entirely unacceptable."
Beaumont, who won silver in the men's quadruple sculls at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has a history of overcoming adversity, including a career-threatening back injury in 2015. His father, Peter Beaumont, also competed in the Olympics. Maidenhead Rowing Club, founded in 1876, is located in an affluent area known for its high-profile residents and has produced several world-class rowers.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, video, or photographs to contact them, referencing incident number 431/30th August 2026.
