British Olympic silver medallist Jack Beaumont was involved in a confrontation on the River Thames on Sunday morning when a speedboat allegedly rammed into a rower from Maidenhead Rowing Club. The incident escalated when the speedboat driver then allegedly accelerated towards Beaumont and subjected him to verbal abuse.
Beaumont, 32, who won silver in the men’s quadruple sculls at the Tokyo Olympics, had approached the speedboat skipper to question his actions near the smaller rowing vessels. Footage from the incident reportedly captured the speedboat owner shouting expletives at Beaumont and telling him to be quiet. The speedboat then appeared to reverse towards Beaumont's scull, an action he skillfully evaded.
Beaumont then reportedly lured the speedboat away from other, potentially more vulnerable rowers further down the river. Witnesses described the speedboat driver as charging at a rowing boat and nearly causing the occupant to fall into the water. "This is someone in a power boat running somebody over which is highly dangerous," one witness stated. The witness also reported the speedboat driver shouting threats, saying "This could have been life-threatening if not fatal."
Thames Valley Police arrested a 67-year-old man from Windsor on suspicion of criminal damage, threats to kill, a Section 4 Public Order Act offense, common assault, and using a watercraft in a manner that endangered a structure or individual. The man remains in police custody. Maidenhead Rowing Club confirmed that a member was involved in a collision with another river user, resulting in damage to club equipment and a subsequent encounter with the speedboat.
The club issued a statement calling the incident "serious and dangerous" and emphasizing that the safety of all river users is their priority. They noted that behavior endangering others is "entirely unacceptable" and that the club, founded in 1876, does not tolerate actions that put members or others at risk. The club is supporting its members and cooperating with the police investigation.
Beaumont, who previously overcame a career-threatening back injury in 2015, comes from a rowing family. His father, Peter, was an Olympian. Maidenhead Rowing Club is located in an area known for hosting athletes and celebrities and has a history of producing world-class rowers.
