Ole Miss Students Die; Chancellor Condemns Online Speculation
University officials urge community to avoid unconfirmed information as packaged Kratom is found during investigations.
Two University of Mississippi students died on campus Tuesday, prompting university officials to address a surge of online speculation. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Shawnboda Mead criticized misinformation circulating on social media, urging the community not to speculate about the circumstances or repeat unconfirmed details.
The Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit stated that packaged Kratom was discovered during both investigations. Kratom, an unregulated herbal extract, can act as a stimulant or an opioid depending on the dosage. Police indicated that it is unclear if Kratom or other substances contributed to the students' deaths. Authorities have advised against ingesting Kratom or any substances not prescribed by a medical professional.
"Local, state, and federal partners are working collaboratively to gather the facts and provide answers as quickly and responsibly as possible," the unit said in a social media post. They also emphasized their close work with the families involved and asked for privacy during this difficult time.
The university reiterated its condolences to the friends, family, and loved ones of the deceased students. Police also reminded the campus community that Narcan, an overdose reversal medication, is available in vending machines across campus.
