Ole Miss staff expressed significant concerns about potential espionage during Lane Kiffin's departure to LSU, leading to an FBI investigation into the team's facilities for bugging devices, according to a program insider. Walker Jones, executive director of Ole Miss's NIL program Grove Collective, revealed the extent of the situation in an interview with the Assorted Crackers podcast.

Kiffin's move to LSU on a $91 million contract in November sparked considerable fallout. Jones described weeks of defending against LSU's attempts to recruit Ole Miss assistant coaches and staff members, stating that the LSU program was "literally trying to burn [Ole Miss] to the ground."

"We actually had the FBI come through and walk the building for bugs and for everything. We knew kind of what was in Baton Rouge, and we knew how they operated," Jones said. He recounted searching his own office for bugs, driven by his understanding of Kiffin's methods. The Ole Miss staff had to implement stringent security measures, using separate communication channels and avoiding written notes, as a significant portion of the staff was expected to follow Kiffin to LSU.

At the time of his departure, Kiffin reportedly gave his Ole Miss staff an ultimatum: join him at LSU immediately or forgo the opportunity. While some staff members moved with Kiffin, others remained to finish the season with Ole Miss, who were still in contention for the national championship and ultimately reached the semifinals.

Following Kiffin's exit, Ole Miss appointed Pete Golding as their new head coach. Jones characterized Golding's hiring as a "locker room hire" desired by the players, which he believed was crucial for retaining talent and maintaining the program's status as a top-10 team. He noted that significant effort was dedicated to preserving the roster and continuing the program's operations, with some staff members working around the clock and sleeping at the Manning Center.

The upcoming 2026 season for Ole Miss begins on September 6 against Louisville. A highly anticipated game will be on September 19, when Kiffin returns to Oxford with his LSU Tigers to face Ole Miss.
