Oktoberfest Opens with AI-Powered Security Measures Amidst Large Crowds

Munich's Theresienwiese fairground buzzed with activity Saturday as the 191st Oktoberfest officially commenced. Mayor Dominik Krause initiated the festivities by tapping the first keg of beer with the traditional cry, "O'zapft is" – meaning "It's been tapped." Thousands of attendees, many clad in traditional Bavarian dirndls and lederhosen, filled the beer tents to secure spots on the benches, accompanied by brass music and the aroma of freshly tapped beer.

The festival, which runs for 16 days until October 4, anticipates approximately 6 million visitors. Alongside the signature beer, traditional delicacies such as pretzels, pork roast, and sausages are also in high demand. The price for a one-liter beer ranges from €14.80 to €15.90, marking an average increase of 2.38% from the previous year. While many visitors hail from Munich and southern Germany, millions travel from across Germany and internationally.

German authorities have implemented tightened security measures this year, partly in response to temporary closures due to overcrowding experienced at the previous festival. For the current event, AI-powered cameras have been installed to detect large crowds in real-time, aiming to manage visitor flow more effectively. Additional security protocols include a ban on knives and flying objects, particularly drones, as well as restrictions on large bags and on marijuana consumption.

Approximately 600 police officers are on duty, augmented by Bavarian riot police, specialized pickpocket investigators, and international task forces from eight countries. The festival grounds span the Theresienwiese, a large fairground in Munich.
