Oklahoma Stuns No. 1 Texas in Red River Rivalry Upset

Unranked Oklahoma handed No. 1 Texas its first loss of the 2026 season on Saturday, defeating the Longhorns 27-24 in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl. The victory came on a last-second field goal after two critical fourth-quarter interceptions thrown by Texas quarterback Arch Manning.

The upset marks a significant moment for the Oklahoma Sooners, who had previously suffered losses to Michigan and Georgia. Texas, which had held the top spot in the rankings, led 17-7 at halftime and maintained a seven-point advantage entering the final quarter.

However, the Longhorns' offense, led by Manning, struggled in the third quarter, generating only 41 yards and punting three times. The turning point came early in the fourth quarter when, following an Oklahoma touchdown, Manning's pass on second-and-13 was intercepted by Oklahoma's Peyton Bowen and returned for a pick-six, leveling the score at 17-17.

Texas responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that put them back in front, 24-17. But with under a minute remaining and a chance to tie or win, Manning threw his second interception of the quarter with 19 seconds left. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer then completed passes for 13 and 20 yards to set up kicker Tate Sandell for the game-winning field goal.

Manning finished the game with 261 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions on 19-of-31 passing. This was Oklahoma's first meeting in the rivalry series since 2023. Texas is scheduled to host Florida next Saturday, who also suffered a loss to South Carolina on Saturday.
