Ohio Mother of 16 Pleads Not Guilty to Child Abuse and Endangerment Charges

Elizabeth Siders, 34, a mother of 16 children who were found living in allegedly horrific conditions, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of child sexual abuse and child endangerment. She appeared in Vinton County Common Pleas Court in Ohio, where she was seen cradling her stomach while wearing an orange jumpsuit.

Siders faces four counts of child sexual abuse and 19 counts of child endangerment. Her attorney, Thomas Stolly, has stated that Siders has been pregnant for a significant portion of her adult life and has not received adequate postpartum medical care, raising concerns about the effects on her well-being.

Authorities discovered the 16 children, ranging in age from 17 months to 18 years old, in July, living in what were described as deplorable conditions in a Hamden home. The investigation initially stemmed from allegations of child sexual abuse involving extended family members.

Siders and her husband, Gary Siders Jr., are also accused of sexual abuse against a minor in 2022, though that alleged victim is reportedly not among the 16 children rescued. Gary Siders Jr. has pleaded not guilty to his charges but was previously found incompetent to stand trial. The couple has been ordered to have no contact with each other.

A judge deemed Elizabeth Siders a flight risk during her court appearance, increasing her bail from $250,000 to $550,000.
