Ohio Mother Beats Terminal Cancer, Welcomes Second Child After Pioneering Treatment

An Ohio woman diagnosed with terminal stage 4 cancer has recovered and welcomed a second child after undergoing pioneering surgery and treatment. Maralee Lellio, 37, was told her breast cancer had aggressively spread to her brain, leaving her with a terminal diagnosis.

Lellio first discovered a lump in her right breast at age 28. Initially told it was benign, the lump grew significantly over four months, leading to a diagnosis of Stage 2B triple-negative breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy while raising her then-one-year-old daughter.

Months after her initial treatment concluded, Lellio began experiencing severe headaches and dizziness, symptoms her doctor attributed to depression. However, an MRI scan revealed a large tumor in her brain, confirming the cancer's return and aggressive spread. This led to a craniotomy to remove the tumor, after which she temporarily lost the ability to walk. Her doctors informed her that they could only offer palliative care to extend her life.

Following medical advice, Lellio sought treatment at Cleveland Clinic. There, she underwent five rounds of radiation therapy and began treatment with a PARP inhibitor, an oral therapy particularly effective for individuals with BRCA mutations, which she possesses. According to Dr. Halle Moore from Cleveland Clinic, the radiation therapy successfully shrunk her tumor, leading to no evidence of active disease.

The young mother then received a medical recommendation to visit Cleveland Clinic and try a new cutting-edge treatment

Lellio paused her treatment with the hope of becoming pregnant. In 2023, she conceived naturally and gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Her children are now nine years old and 22 months old.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 12 to 13 percent of women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. This risk increases to between 55 and 65 percent for women with a harmful BRCA mutation.
