Officer, Woman Injured in Shooting Near Notre Dame Campus After Tailgate Event

A woman and a police officer sustained injuries from a single gunshot during a post-tailgate fight near the University of Notre Dame's campus in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday night. The suspect remains at large, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. ET as crowds were departing the university's tailgating areas and moving toward Eddy Street Commons. South Bend Police stated that Notre Dame Police reported observing a male suspect armed and pointing a gun at individuals. When South Bend officers located a suspect matching the description, that person was unarmed.

As approximately 20 South Bend Police officers were present and responding to a call in Eddy Street Commons, a single gunshot was heard. Officers soon discovered a woman with a non-life-threatening leg wound and a South Bend Police officer who sustained an injury, possibly from a ricochet or shrapnel.

Both victims were transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover fully. The officer was reported to be in stable condition, and the woman was also described as being okay.

Notre Dame officials indicated that the suspected shooter fled the scene westward. The suspect is described as a heavyset Black male with dreadlocks, wearing blue shorts and a black shirt with a red and blue design. According to reports, the suspect was missing one shoe.

Following the shooting, police evacuated nearby businesses and parking garages. The South Bend Police Department established a lockdown in the commercial district for an active investigation and asked the public to avoid the area while a significant police presence secured the scene.

Authorities reported another shooting approximately one mile away later that night, which resulted in at least two fatalities and one person critically injured. Police have not indicated any connection between these two incidents.
