Off-Duty NYPD Officer Arrested for Interfering with Traffic Stop

An off-duty NYPD officer was arrested early Friday morning after he allegedly interfered with a car stop in Upper Manhattan, according to police and sources. Officer Daniel Almonte, 35, was taken into custody around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of Dyckman Street and Vermilyea Avenue in Inwood.

Almonte, who was not involved in the initial traffic stop, reportedly intervened when he observed officers interacting with a pulled-over individual. Law enforcement sources stated that Almonte was given warnings to step back but instead grabbed one of the officers handling the incident.

Following the alleged physical interference, officers placed Almonte under arrest. He has been charged with obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct, police confirmed.

Prosecutors stated that Almonte was released with a desk appearance ticket, which requires him to appear in court at a later date. The NYPD has suspended Almonte without pay following the arrest.
