Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to campaign alongside Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Detroit on Oct. 24, lending his support to the progressive nominee following a closely contested Democratic primary. The rally will also feature other prominent Democratic candidates in the state, including gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson.

Obama's appearance with El-Sayed marks a significant show of support as the party works to unify behind its candidates in the race for the open Senate seat. El-Sayed narrowly defeated moderate Rep. Haley Stevens in the August primary, a contest that highlighted ideological divisions within the Democratic Party. El-Sayed received backing from progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while Stevens was supported by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.

This campaign stop is part of Obama's expanding role in the midterm elections. He recently recorded two dozen ads for Democratic candidates running for governor and Senate, which are set to be released in the coming weeks. He has also engaged in campaign activities for other candidates, including appearances for Iowa Senate candidate Josh Turek and Texas Senate candidate James Talarico.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black and South Asian person to hold the office, previously campaigned with El-Sayed last month. Obama spoke with El-Sayed by phone shortly after his primary victory.

The upcoming rally with Obama, the nation's first Black president, is anticipated to provide a boost to El-Sayed's campaign as Michigan begins its early in-person voting period. The event also benefits Benson, who is running against Republican John James for governor. Benson and James are scheduled to debate for the first time on Tuesday, while El-Sayed and Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers will debate on Oct. 8.

Obama's involvement in the midterms, while selective, follows a pattern from previous election cycles. He has previously held campaign events in Detroit, including during the 2024 presidential election and the 2022 midterms. His campaign appearances have historically drawn large crowds and notable guests. This week, he is also scheduled to headline a fundraiser for Democratic Senate candidates.
