Obama's Defense of Ilhan Omar Sparks Conservative Backlash
Former president's statement draws criticism, with opponents citing past IRS investigations during his administration.
Former President Barack Obama's public support for Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., amid multiple federal investigations into her immigration status and finances, has ignited a swift and strong reaction from conservatives.
Obama stated that it is a "basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say." He characterized the investigations into Omar as an example of the Trump administration "bringing the full weight of the federal government down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president." He added that such actions should "outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views."
Obama's lengthy post, viewed millions of times online, was met with immediate criticism from conservative commentators. Many pointed to investigations and actions taken during Obama's own presidency, including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) targeting of Tea Party groups and the Crossfire Hurricane investigation into then-candidate Donald Trump.
"This cannot be real," wrote former FBI deputy director Dan Bongino on X. "This petty tyrant lecturing us about ‘American democracy’ is like being lectured by a screaming five-year-old about self-control. Sit down Mr. President, everyone knows who you really are."
Federalist senior contributor Benjamin Weingarten commented on X, "Think about the utter gall of the man behind the Russian collusion hoax, and who, along with his henchmen and hitmen, helped bloom a million poisonous ‘probes’ and persecutions whereby the ‘full weight of the federal government’ was ‘brought down’ on the ENTIRETY OF THE OPPOSING POLITICAL PARTY."
Conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza suggested on X that Obama was defending a "protégé" as part of a "deliberate scheme to ‘decolonize’ America." Another conservative influencer, Gunther Eagleman, stated on X, "This is the same guy whose IRS went after Tea Party groups. Spare me the lecture, Barack."
The White House also responded, with spokeswoman Lauren Bis stating, "Unlike Joe Biden, President Trump has not weaponized the Department of Justice against his political foes. The Department is focused on restoring law and order and keeping Americans safe."
Trump has denied involvement in the investigations, stating they are a matter for the Justice Department.
Sources have indicated that investigators are examining allegations of fraud related to immigration paperwork concerning Omar and her father. Omar's home in Washington, D.C., was reportedly raided by federal agents. Additionally, the U.S. attorney for the District of Washington, D.C., announced an investigation into Omar's financial disclosures.
Omar's office has defended her, calling the raid an "outrageous abuse of power" and an "unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies." The statement also asserted that "Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has done nothing wrong. No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies."
