Obama Mocks Trump's White House Renovations, Cites 'Saddam Hussein Cheesecake Factory'

Former President Barack Obama on Saturday criticized President Donald Trump's White House renovations, comparing the property to a "Saddam Hussein opening a Cheesecake Factory" during a campaign rally in Cleveland, Ohio. Obama delivered the remarks while campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of the midterm elections.

Obama, speaking in support of gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and Senate candidate Sherrod Brown, suggested Trump was overly focused on "home renovations" and should instead be on HGTV. He specifically mentioned the Rose Garden makeover, the ballroom project, and the South Lawn helipad.

The Rose Garden renovations included replacing the central lawn with limestone paving to create an outdoor patio, while the ballroom project aims to provide a permanent, secure space for large official events, a need identified in a 2000 White House planning document. The upgraded helipad featuring the presidential seal was unveiled in September.

Obama also addressed Trump's foreign policy, particularly concerning Iran, accusing the president of starting an "unnecessary war" that led to higher energy costs. He defended the nuclear agreement negotiated during his own presidency, stating it prevented Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Trump withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 agreement in 2018, citing its insufficient nuclear restrictions and failure to address Iran's missile program and support for militant groups.

The Obama Presidential Center's projected cost has surpassed $1 billion, nearly triple its initial estimate, with subcontractors alleging millions owed and taxpayers facing significant public infrastructure costs.

Obama also criticized Trump's immigration enforcement policies, urging Ohio voters to hold Republicans accountable. Obama previously carried Ohio in 2008 and 2012, but the state has supported Trump in his presidential campaigns.
