Former President Barack Obama has described President Donald Trump's persistent attention towards him and his family as "strange," suggesting it reveals a lack of focus on the American people and the duties of the presidency.
In an interview on the “All The Smoke” podcast, Obama stated that during his own time in office, he was too occupied with presidential work to dwell on his predecessor. "The idea that I’d be worrying about somebody who came before and me trying to measure like, ‘What’s he done today?’ Look, constantly worrying about that is a strange thing to me,” Obama said. “It shows me somebody who is not focused on the American people and the job they’re supposed to do.”
Obama has been the subject of numerous critical remarks from Trump, including recent instances during discussions about the Iran deal and critiques of his presidential library design. Earlier this year, Obama also addressed a racist video depicting him and his wife that was shared on Trump's Truth Social account, a post that was later removed but for which Trump did not apologize.
Responding to a question about how he maintains composure when Trump frequently brings up him and his family, even years after leaving office, Obama acknowledged the persistent attention. "I obviously have a room in his head. A suite in his head,” he remarked.
Obama emphasized that performing presidential duties effectively requires sustained concentration. "If you’re doing the job right every day, you’ve got five, ten things that are real hard, and you have to be constantly focused,” he explained. He added that early in his presidency, he learned to "screen out the noise" to better address the tasks at hand. "It’s like if you are constantly worrying about what other people think, somebody can have a bad day and cuss you out, and suddenly controlling your performance, it’s controlling your thought processes,” Obama said. “So, I screen that stuff out pretty early on, and I ain’t worrying about it. Another way of putting it is no reason to dignify that kind of stuff.”
