The suspect apprehended for a deadly stabbing rampage in Oakland, California, that left one person dead and four injured was on parole for a previous knifing spree, according to authorities and court records.

Jose Jesus Rodriguez, 34, is accused of carrying out a 30-minute series of attacks across Cesar Chavez Park and three other locations on Monday. Police identified Rodriguez as a homeless man with mental health issues.

Previous Conviction and Parole

In 2019, Rodriguez was convicted of stabbing an Uber driver and a garbage collector. He was subsequently imprisoned and released on parole in 2023. Following his release, Rodriguez reportedly incurred multiple parole violations and struggled to find employment.

Reports indicate that Rodriguez allegedly attempted to bite a police officer's ear and swung a wooden board at two individuals after his release. A parole agent noted last year that "there are no programs to appropriately address Rodriguez’s escalating behavior," adding that he "poses a significant threat to the community."

Public Safety Concerns

Legal analysts suggest that the incident brings to the forefront discussions about public safety measures in Oakland, particularly concerning individuals with mental health issues and a history of violence who are re-entering the community. The case has prompted some residents to express fear and concern about the level of safety in the city.

Rodriguez is currently being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail and faces charges including murder and assault. The series of stabbings prompted an investigation by law enforcement across multiple locations in East Oakland.
