A stabbing spree in Oakland, California, on Monday night resulted in one death and four injuries, with authorities stating the attacks appear to have been random. Police apprehended a suspect but have withheld names for both the accused and the victims as the investigation continues.
The violence unfolded over approximately 30 minutes, beginning shortly before 7:30 p.m. near Cesar Chavez Park. Officers responding to a report of a shooting instead found a victim with stab wounds. The victim died at the scene. Subsequent stabbings occurred near 38th Avenue and San Leandro Street, the Fruitvale BART station, and near 39th Avenue and International Boulevard, with a total of five victims across four separate locations.
Investigators believe the arrested suspect is responsible for all five attacks. The individuals hospitalized include three men and two women aged between 30 and 50. One survivor remained in critical condition Tuesday, while the other three were reported as stable. Police stated that at least two of the victims were experiencing homelessness, as is the suspect.
During the search for the attacker, community members provided assistance to law enforcement, helping officers locate the suspect near 39th Avenue and 35th Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. The suspect was taken into custody on foot after a pursuit, with officers ordering the individual to drop a weapon, which was subsequently recovered. Police described the incident as the most significant series of attacks of its kind encountered in recent years.
Authorities have declined to name the suspect or the victims, citing the early stage of the investigation and the need to determine potential connections between those targeted. Detectives are working to establish the motive behind the seemingly random assaults.
