O’Brien’s Market, a family-run grocery chain that has operated in central California for 49 years, is closing its two remaining stores. The owner, Charles “Chuck” O’Brien, cited the current business climate as the reason for the decision, stating it was the most difficult one he has had to make.

The closures will result in the layoff of 117 employees. The Dale Road store in Modesto is scheduled to close by October 4, 2026, though it may remain open longer. The other location, on W. Roseburg Avenue, is subject to a potential sale by an outside buyer. If the sale is completed, existing employees could be retained. However, if negotiations fail, this store will close by September 26. It is unclear if these negotiations extend to the Dale Road location.

O’Brien’s Market previously operated three locations in California’s Central Valley, with stores in Riverbank and two in Modesto. The Riverbank store closed in July 2024 and was sold to Cost Less Food Company. As the remaining stores prepare to shut down, O’Brien’s is holding a storewide sale, offering up to 24% off most items.

Customers have expressed sadness over the impending closures on the market's Facebook page, with many sharing memories of shopping at O'Brien's over the years. The chain was a longtime regional favorite, with shoppers noting its deli, coffee offerings, and convenient shopping experience.

This closure follows other recent developments in the California grocery sector, including discount retailer Grocery Outlet's announcement in March of plans to close 36 stores nationwide, eight of which are in California. Those eight locations have been closed since July 2026.
