Alexander Stepnowsky, a 23-year-old New York University student, appeared in Manhattan court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing in his hate crimes case. Stepnowsky is accused of raising a flag bearing two swastikas and a Star of David, along with NYU branding, at a campus building dedicated to a Jewish donor during the university's graduation festivities in May.

Stepnowsky, a resident of Fairfield, Connecticut, has pleaded not guilty to charges including burglary and criminal trespass as a hate crime, and first-degree aggravated harassment. Law enforcement sources told The Post that Stepnowsky admitted to the conduct, stating he was motivated by dissatisfaction with NYU's handling of political issues concerning Israel.

He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to return to court in October. NYU officials have stated that they are investigating the incident and considering disciplinary actions, which could include expulsion.
