New York City police officers from the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) successfully rescued a 31-year-old woman who was in crisis on the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday evening. The operation involved officers climbing the bridge's suspension cables to reach the woman, who was situated on a narrow steel beam high above the roadway.

Police were alerted to the situation around 7:38 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls. Upon arrival, officers found the woman in distress on an elevated section of the bridge. ESU officers, equipped with safety straps, then ascended the bridge's structure to engage with her.

Video released by the NYPD captured the tense moments as officers carefully made their way along the cables toward the woman. The bridge towers rise approximately 276 feet above the roadway, and the roadway itself is about 127 feet above the East River.

For nearly an hour, the officers spoke calmly with the woman, attempting to de-escalate the situation and encourage her to accept help. One officer, identified as Chris, introduced himself and asked for her name, stating his intention to talk and help her. He described the situation as a "permanent solution to a temporary problem" and emphasized the strength in accepting assistance.

Body camera footage documented the officers' approach and dialogue. The woman was seated on a narrow steel beam near one of the bridge's towers. As rescue efforts progressed, officers moved in to secure her. Footage appeared to show the woman initially resisting before multiple officers were able to pull her to safety.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch commended the officers' actions, describing the rescue as extraordinary. She highlighted their care, courage, and compassion in remaining with the woman for nearly an hour and waiting for the opportune moment to bring her back from the edge.

The rescue operation led to the temporary closure of the Brooklyn-bound lanes of the bridge, causing significant traffic delays in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The woman was safely brought down and transported to Woodhull Hospital for evaluation. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Officials have not released further details about the woman's condition or the reasons for her actions.
