NYPD Officers Rescue Woman from Brooklyn Bridge Cables
Emergency Service Unit members scaled the structure to reach the woman who was in distress.
New York City Police Department officers successfully rescued a woman who was positioned precariously on the steel cables of the Brooklyn Bridge on Friday, appearing to be on the verge of jumping.
The incident unfolded shortly before noon, drawing the attention of numerous pedestrians on the bridge. Video footage captured the woman climbing past the walkway and onto the bridge's metal beams, eventually perching on a utility box high above the water.
NYPD Aviation Unit helicopters hovered overhead as members of the Emergency Service Unit, equipped with harnesses, rappelled down the cables to reach the woman. After securing her, they brought her back to safety.
One witness, Mariana Madrigal, 30, described the scene, stating, "There was a girl that was trying to kill herself." She noted that while she didn't hear the woman, her actions indicated distress.
Traffic on the bridge was halted for over an hour due to the operation. The woman was subsequently transported to Bellevue Hospital for a psychological evaluation.
