Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration has informed the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) that NYPD officers' holiday paychecks for July will be delayed, a move that has prompted the union to file a grievance. Instead of receiving the pay in the second week of July as in previous years, officers are now slated to receive their holiday checks during the third week of the month.

In a missive to union members, PBA President Patrick Hendry stated that the delay is "not only a violation of our contractual rights" but also "an insult to PBA members who are working long hours in extreme heat to meet the extraordinary security demands of the upcoming holiday weekend." The grievance was filed with the NYPD's office of labor relations on Wednesday.

Hendry indicated that the union will pursue all measures to hold the city administration accountable for its "refusal to support our members." Sources indicated that the grievance could proceed to arbitration if the issue is not resolved.

Holiday pay for NYPD officers varies based on their position on the pay scale, with basic-level members potentially receiving nearly $2,800. The PBA noted that a similar delay occurred in January shortly after Mamdani took office, at which time city officials cited the need to update the city's payroll systems to accommodate new tax requirements. This time, however, the city has offered no explanation for the delay, according to Hendry's email.

Thousands of uniformed officers are expected to work 12-hour shifts leading up to and including the Fourth of July holiday. This period includes a number of significant events, such as a wedding celebration, the International Naval and Aviation Review, the Parade of Sails, Macy's annual fireworks display, and a World Cup match at MetLife Stadium. City Hall and NYPD officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
