NYPD K9 Returns to Duty to Honor Late Handler

Mahmoud, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, has returned to active duty with the NYPD, marking a unique first for the department's K-9 unit. The dog had retired approximately two months prior, following the death of his handler, Detective Kirk Boone, who passed away from natural causes in July shortly after his own retirement.

NYPD dogs typically retire alongside their handlers due to the strong bonds formed during their years of service and shared living. However, in this instance, Boone's family felt that Mahmoud continuing his service would be a fitting tribute to the detective. "To honor that and to honor his legacy, the family thought it would be most fitting to have his dog come out of retirement and continue the service," said Detective Jeremy Lucca, Mahmoud's new handler.

Mahmoud, who is named after Boone's former partner, Officer David Mahmoud, a 75th Precinct officer who died of 9/11-related cancer in 2010, was assigned to Lucca in August. Lucca and Mahmoud have been undergoing training to recertify the dog. "We're just finishing up a search and rescue program where they'll be certifying, hopefully, next week," Lucca stated, noting that the dog is learning new skills.

Since his return to duty, Mahmoud has participated in several high-profile events, including covering the U.S. Open and the United Nations General Assembly. Lucca plans to continue honing Mahmoud's skills and hopes to certify him in additional specialties. Mahmoud is also trained as a cadaver and drug-sniffing dog.

Lucca, who knew Mahmoud during his time with Boone, stated, "We're learning and growing together." ESU K-9 trainer Det. Scott Mateyaschuk described Mahmoud as an energetic, curious, and friendly dog, noting that the transition back to service was smooth given his short time out of the field. Mateyaschuk added, "It brings back the legacy of Kirk Boone, and he was just a great guy all around."

Boone had previously served as a 75th Precinct officer before joining the Emergency Service Unit (ESU), with David Mahmoud as his partner. "We see him in another two years of service, and then we'll retire him at 10 years old," Mateyaschuk said, referencing the average retirement age for NYPD K-9s.

The Detectives Endowment Association acknowledged Mahmoud and Boone as "selfless heroes," with President Scott Munro stating, "It's an amazing way to carry Kirk and David's legacies forward."

Lucca anticipates serving with Mahmoud for several more years, with plans to retire together once Lucca reaches his 20-year mark with the department. After retirement, Mahmoud is expected to enjoy a more relaxed life, free from the demands of police work.
